Llangattock Community Council is writing to Powys County Council to express its concern about PCC's decision to remove the C0136 road in Llangattock and up to the T Junction on the mountain from the winter gritting programme. In future, roads in Llangattock will be gritted only as far as the primary school. You can see the winter gritting map by following this link.
The C0136 road is heavily used throughout the year as a link between the A465 Heads of the Valleys Road, Llangattock and Crickhowell. It is a regular commuting route for residents of Llangattock and Crickhowell and parents transporting children to and from Crickhowell High School. Since a 3t weight limit was imposed on Gilwern Viaduct, it is the C0136 is also now a route for school buses. It is, in the opinion of the Community Council, more heavily used than the B4560 road from Llangynidr to Garnlydan, which will be gritted under your revised programme. In its opinion, the C0136 meets all your criteria for precautionary, community and high-level routes.
This is a hazardous road in winter, rising as it does from the relatively sheltered Usk Valley to the extremes close to the highest point on the A465. Drivers are regularly caught out by changes in weather between the village and the mountain top, in January this year Mountain Rescue had to use 4x4 vehicles to rescue drivers from the mountain top. Under the new regime, drivers travelling from the Heads of the Valleys area along the B4560 but turning right towards Crickhowell will expect the C0136 to be gritted but will, instead find themselves heading down a steep winding hill on untreated surfaces.
