Powys 111 and Out of Hours Announcement
27th September 2018
Phone 111

How we access GP out of hours services and NHS Direct in Powys is changing on 3 October. Instead of having two different telephone numbers to remember, you will soon be able to access both of these services through a single, free to call, number – 111. This does not mean that Shropdoc is closing – GP out of hours services will still be provided by Shropdoc for most of Powys as they are now (those living in Ystradgynlais are currently supported by Abertawe Bro Morgannwg UHB and will continue to be in the future). The change is being made to make life simpler for people by having one, free, number to call where you will have access to the right advice, support and treatment 24 hours a day. 111 is being rolled out across Wales and the number is also used in England which again will make it easier to remember and access wherever you are and whenever you need it. Depending on the urgency and severity of your call, you may speak to a health care professional, who could be a nurse, pharmacist or a doctor. Sometimes it may be necessary for you to speak to more than one person to get the right treatment but we will keep this to an absolute minimum so you get to speak with the right health care professional first time. If your need is urgent and requires you to see a GP out-of-hours, you will be asked to attend a primary care centre based at one of our hospital sites, as is the case currently. However, for the majority of conditions, our highly skilled nurses or pharmacists will be able to deal with many cases over the phone. NHS 111 call takers are trained to recognise when there is a threat to life; if you dial 111 but do need an ambulance, you will be put through to the emergency ambulance service. Remember – phone 111 when it’s urgent but not life threatening.

Keep your eyes peeled for a newletter which is under construction.
